I'm Mike Walker. I'm David Patrick. We are dads on books. I'm a mom. Dad's on books. Two minutes later. But we are dads on books. We're addicted to books. We sit on books and we even talk about books. Welcome to another episode of... Dad's on books. Hello! How are y'all?
David 0:26
Good, Mike, how are you?
Mike 0:28
I'm good. Welcome to another episode. Of dads on books and guests.
David 0:36
Yes, we have a guest here. Hey, guests, would you like to introduce yourself?
SARAH 0:39
Sure. I'm Sarah. Yeah.
David 0:42
Sarah, India?
SARAH 0:43
Yeah.
David 0:44
This is my daughter, Sarah.
Mike 0:45
Yes!
David 0:46
Yes!
Mike 0:47
Sarah!
So, yes, our friend Sarah is here today.
David 0:52
Who
Mike 0:53
I got to hang out with a few months ago.
David 0:54
Yay!
Mike 0:55
And I miss you, Sarah. We had so much fun. So, do you, Sarah, want to tell us what our book is that we read this week?
SARAH 1:05
Yes, book.
Mike 1:06
And that book is for those who aren't looking at
SARAH 1:10
Oh yeah. Warrior caps into the lives.
Mike 1:13
Now, that would have been a great thing to know when I went searching for this book. I didn't realize it was a big long series. And so, my very first experience with this book was actually called, "Hang on Warriors, a Warrior's Spirit."
David 1:33
Oh, which one is that?
Mike 1:35
That is a collection of three stories that are all short. Not short short, but I mean, the whole book was probably about as long as into the wild, but it was about three different cats. And kind of their back stories, which I have to imagine means they are in this Warriors series, some where, but we just
David 1:59
that
Mike 1:59
don't get
David 2:00
What cats were they?
Mike 2:02
They were Pebble Shine, I think. And then there was one named Mothwing.
SARAH 2:11
You?
David 2:11
You know Mothwing?
SARAH 2:12
Yeah.
Mike 2:12
And Tree.
David 2:14
Just Tree?
SARAH 2:15
Good.
Mike 2:15
That's his name
SARAH 2:16
Yes, so I don't have two or two in
David 2:18
me. The
Mike 2:20
The crazy thing was, I started this book and it has no preface. I was like, why am I not understanding all of these terms? And they're saying all these things, calling things things that I don't understand, but I found it to be kind of a mystery. And it wasn't super difficult to understand what they were trying to say. But I was able to figure it out. So there were things like the Thunder Path.
David 2:48
Yes, Thunder
Mike 2:49
That
David 2:49
Path.
Mike 2:50
I didn't understand the monster. So I slowly figured these things out and then at the end I was like, oh, it has like other books that you can read and whatever. And it goes back to I began beginning. The very first book and I'm like, did I really?
David 3:09
You did read the whole thing?
Mike 3:10
Read the wrong book. And I did. But honestly, I was so excited about the book. was happy because I got to read another one.
David 3:20
Oh, that's great.
Mike 3:21
So thank you, Sarah, for suggesting these warrior cats.
SARAH 3:25
You're welcome.
David 3:26
this world, if you will.
Mike 3:28
And it is a world not too far from ours.
SARAH 3:32
Even now it's the view.
David 3:33
Even though it's what?
SARAH 3:34
It's still the view in the world. It's just cats.
Mike 3:37
Exactly.
David 3:38
Well, you mentioned when you first read whatever it was that you read because even Sarah has the stack of books. It's actually all of the books in this series. Oh, never mind. It's other series is because I'm just seeing the number one is the fourth apprentice. There's
SARAH 3:56
different art parts of this year.
Mike 3:57
Yes. That's what I found when I was like, oh, wait, I don't know what's going on. I've got to figure this out. And I finally did and it really is intriguing. Very
David 4:11
cool. Well, what I was going to say is even though I did start with the right book, which is the first book in the first series and the first thing, one thing that we did share is I also felt lost.
At the beginning, I mean, I remember going, okay, too many proper nouns, too many cats.
SARAH 4:30
I told you there's going to be a lot of names too in the mind.
David 4:32
I know. But instead of memorizing them, I'm proud of myself. I just let it go. I trusted the author. But when I needed to, I read the beginning where it lists the clans and all the
Mike 4:44
Yes,
David 4:44
cats. So I thought, okay, this does not help me now,
Mike 4:47
no,
David 4:47
but I just let it go. And then when I really when I thought, okay, I really don't know who this is. I go back to the guide and that worked really, really well.
Mike 4:56
That is smart, I may have done that once or twice.
David 5:01
Mm-hmm.
Mike 5:01
But I never felt like I needed to go back and figure out who was who and what
David 5:06
what.
Mike 5:06
was
David 5:07
Mm-hmm.
Don't get me started on the names of these cats,
Mike 5:24
but they're, they're all, not all of them, but a lot of them fall into kind of a category.
David 5:32
Yes.
Mike 5:33
So they, Like the apprentices are something paw. Like
David 5:38
yes.
Mike 5:38
one of them was river paw or fire
David 5:41
Yep.
Mike 5:41
paw,
David 5:41
Yep.
Mike 5:41
fire paw. That's what it was. I don't know if there's a river paw, there may be in there somewhere.
David 5:44
Ah, this probably is Mike, there's all kinds of paws.
Mike 5:47
Yes. Two right here.
David 5:49
Exactly.
Mike 5:50
Bada, bada, bada, bada, bada.
David 5:52
Hey! I did the same thing. I just let go and enjoyed it.
Mike 5:56
Yeah.
David 5:57
And, uh, I also had fun with the maps at the beginning.
SARAH 6:00
Me too.
Mike 6:00
I did not look at the maps too in depth because without knowing the story, I didn't get why I needed the map yet.
David 6:11
But did you use it throughout? As you were reading?
Mike 6:13
I used it a couple of times. I looked at it.
SARAH 6:16
I knew that.
David 6:17
Okay.
Mike 6:17
This makes sense. Like, uh, I think they were going to the four trees.
David 6:22
Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Mike 6:23
It was called
David 6:24
trees.
Mike 6:24
the four
David 6:24
Yes.
Mike 6:24
Yeah. Yeah. And I was like, oh, but where is that? So I did look at the map at that point.
David 6:31
And then it was pretty far in when I realized that the two different maps are of the same place. one was the cats point of view. And the other was more of the human, the, I'm sorry.
Mike 6:41
Oh,
David 6:42
The two
Mike 6:43
leg maps, the two leg and people, the two leg.
David 6:45
Yeah. The two legs
Mike 6:46
and thank you, Syria, for pointing that out that we can see both maps.
David 6:52
Well, for one thing, I noticed it pretty far in probably more than, probably more than halfway through the book. I'm like, oh, that's the human point of view. Yeah, page 160 is when I noticed this. And I thought, oh, okay, because I was using the cat version the entire time, whenever I go back and look at the map.
Mike 7:10
That's all I did. I didn't even notice there was a second map to be honest.
David 7:17
Good. So it's not me. I thought you'd laugh at me and make fun of me. But
Mike 7:21
No,
David 7:21
good. Yeah.
Mike 7:21
I totally like,
SARAH 7:22
I used to use the two like one. I always use the cat.
Mike 7:25
That's good.
SARAH 7:26
Cause for the, the people on instead of the thunder past it says something right? White
David 7:34
chapel road or white
Mike 7:35
Oh,
David 7:36
white.
SARAH 7:37
so if they say like high stones and if I'm looking at the people map, and it says devils fingers, which is at this used line and they're the same place that it's like confusion. If I look at this and I don't know where they are. This is the first book, so you haven't memorized what everything is yet.
Mike 7:55
Yeah.
SARAH 7:56
Unless you really, unless you're reading the bathroom.
Mike 7:58
Which would be weird.
David 7:59
Sarah, I'm glad you,
SARAH 8:00
I'm
David 8:01
glad you pointed out the disused mine because that does come to play. In the book,
Mike 8:06
Yep.
David 8:06
and it's really cool. And that's around the time I discovered the two maps and it was really cool to see their point of view. The cats pointing view of, oh, it's just an old abandoned mine. But in their world, it's this really, really important thing. And I did actually before the moon shown shine. Before the moon glared onto the rock, I thought, oh, I know what's going to happen. I just, I saw it coming that total darkness. I thought, oh, they're going to be at the stone where the moon shines in. It didn't take away from how cool the description was and that journey.
Mike 8:39
Yeah.
David 8:39
It was just really neat. And that's a pattern for the whole book. I just really got into it. I loved it.
Mike 8:44
I really did. Really, it was really so interesting, learning the different world.
David 8:50
And
Mike 8:52
correlating it to our world.
David 8:54
Yes.
Mike 8:55
I have cats. And they are totally house cats.
SARAH 9:02
In the start of the book, it says four Billy left our two, let home to become a warrior. That means that one of their cats ran away and that's that it came to him. And then it says we still miss him very much. And for Benjamin and his brother who is now within a start plan. And yes, it turned out. So that means that then can they die.
Mike 9:21
Yeah.
SARAH 9:22
Because these will start ramming this time.
Mike 9:24
Exactly. I read that at first and I had no idea what that meant.
David 9:29
Yup.
Mike 9:30
I actually, I, when I read it, I did kind of know because I had already read the other book.
David 9:34
Oh,
Mike 9:35
So just a really, really cool book.
David 9:38
yes. And again, sent she mentioned StarClan. I too read that at the beginning had no idea
Mike 9:45
yeah.
David 9:45
what it meant. Trusted didn't care. Cloud right in. And then somewhere in the book it mentioned StarClan. Whenever it did, I was already aware of the clans and the map and I said, where's StarClan? And I guess it wasn't clear in that mention what it was. So I think I looked back, didn't find it on the map and thought, oh, I think that's what I did. You did the same thing?
SARAH 10:06
I don't know. Yeah. I don't remember. It was a long time.
Mike 10:09
I mean you've read, have you read all of the books?
SARAH 10:12
No, I'm on.
David 10:14
Live with your knees.
Mike 10:14
Bring them over.
SARAH 10:15
I'm on this one.
Mike 10:16
What's that one called?
SARAH 10:18
It's called a vision of shadow, StarFist night.
Mike 10:21
Ooh.
SARAH 10:22
It's the--
Mike 10:28
It's great to be able to splice
David 10:30
things.
Mike 10:31
Cut! Mark Clip.
SARAH 10:34
34th
Mike 10:34
The 34th book. Holy cow.
SARAH 10:37
book. Yeah.
David 10:38
Those of you at home that are watching, including you, Mike, what she was doing
Mike 10:42
was
David 10:44
there's just a bunch of different series and you don't have to read them. But each one of those paragraphs is a series, almost all of them with six books. I'm right here.
SARAH 10:53
They all have six books, except for the like the super edition.
David 10:56
Oh, yeah, except for the super editions.
Mike 10:59
Which--
SARAH 10:59
Is a super edition? It's pretty short for a super edition.
Mike 11:02
Oh, okay. So, did we really explain very well the whole premise of this series?
David 11:10
Nope. I don't think so.
Mike 11:11
Started talking about it right away.
David 11:13
Yes. We should've--
Mike 11:13
yes. We
David 11:14
Well, go
Mike 11:14
should
David 11:15
ahead. Well,
Mike 11:15
explain it, Sarah.
David 11:16
Yes, Sarah. Explain it.
SARAH 11:17
So, there's a house cat. His name is Rusty. I know his name is Orange. And he keeps having dreams about him chasing a mouse through the woods. So, he keeps going into the woods and you having fun in the trees and stuff. And then he needs a cat in the woods named Grepo. And he's like, that's a weird name. Why does it have two parts and stuff like that? And then they become friends. So then Grepo says, maybe you want to join our clan because we're such good friends. And then Rusty is thinking about joining the plan. So Grepo brings his leader, Blue Star, and--
Mike 12:03
Tiger Klau.
SARAH 12:04
No. No.
Mike 12:05
Are you sure? What the--
SARAH 12:05
What up for warriors?
Mike 12:07
Tiger Klau.
SARAH 12:09
Lionheart.
Mike 12:09
Oh, Lionheart. Oh, right. That was before Lionheart. I mean, what?
Grepo
SARAH 12:19
brought Blue Star and Lionheart to meet Rusty. And the side, if he wanted to join the plan. But Rusty so couldn't decide. So then, Blue Star said, "I'll come back tomorrow at Sun High," which is like noon, because the sun is at the
Mike 12:36
The
SARAH 12:36
highest.
Mike 12:36
highest point.
SARAH 12:37
Yeah. And you better have your decision by then. So she comes back at Sun High the next day. And then Rusty decides to join the plan. And he gets his apprentice name by her paw. Because all the apprentices have paws at the end of the noon. So basically, when you are a kid, you get your name name. So if my name-- there's a rose kit-- then I would be rose kid when I was born. Then when I became an apprentice, I would be rose paw. And then when I became a warrior, I would get a different warrior stuff. It could be like light, tree, claw, tail. There's a lot of different options. So then I'd be rose light. There's something. And then, if I became clan leader, then I'd be rose star, because all the clan leaders have star at the end of their name.
Mike 13:24
Because they are able to converse with the star
SARAH 13:29
clan. And-- Love
Mike 13:30
it. And tell
SARAH 13:31
Medicine
Mike 13:31
me more.
SARAH 13:32
cats. Their name doesn't matter, but they can also converse with star clan. They don't change their name and they become a medicine cat.
Mike 13:39
Yep.
David 13:39
But they're not allowed to get me out of
Mike 13:44
But they also, they are chosen to be medicine cats. Partially because they are able to talk to star clan if I remember correctly.
David 13:54
Yes.
Mike 13:55
So in one of the stories, something questionable happens where
David 13:59
Like
Mike 13:59
a
David 13:59
what?
Mike 13:59
cat might not be able to really talk to star clan. So it's very interesting. Sometimes you have to make an adjustment.
So yeah, so basically the story is mostly about rusty or fire paw. Basically his trials and tribulations into his clan. And how, because he started out as a house pet, a house
SARAH 14:29
A
Mike 14:30
cat.
SARAH 14:30
kitty pet.
Mike 14:31
Oh, what?
SARAH 14:31
A kitty pet? Yeah.
Mike 14:32
a kitty pet. Thank you. How he started out as a kitty pet, the other cats, a lot of them didn't think that he was worthy of being in their clan. So it's really his trials.
SARAH 14:46
They think that as they're not clan born, he shouldn't be part of the plan. But I think that if a kitty pet can move that they can be strong and fight in everything and they can be part of the plan. And that a lot, a lot of kitties that's joined it.
Mike 15:01
Oh, awesome. That's good to know, because I was like, I hope that it's not just like rusty who decides to join. And then, you know, you never hear about another one. Like, Oh, maybe he's
David 15:14
the one,
Mike 15:14
the chosen one.
David 15:15
mm-hmm,
Mike 15:16
Neo
SARAH 15:16
some, some kitty pets who join plans, they keep their kitty pet me sometimes.
Mike 15:22
Oh, okay.
SARAH 15:23
Cool. Oh, cool. Like
Mike 15:24
interesting.
SARAH 15:24
It is not a sport. I just, you know, there's a cat named Millie who joins the plan. She was a kitty pet, but she keeps her name, but she's always Millie. She's not a Killycock.
David 15:33
Millie's a good name. I wouldn't change it if it ain't broke, you know.
Mike 15:36
Yeah. I like it. So favorite parts of this book in particular.
David 15:43
Do you have one, Sarah? Thank you. Thank you. Can I talk about one more you're looking?
Mike 15:48
And while you're looking, can I ask real quickly, did you go back and read this book again before this
SARAH 15:54
What?
Mike 15:55
or did you just remember so much about it that you didn't really need to read it again?
SARAH 16:00
I don't even remember, because last year, steer hours I was afraid and I did look at the report.
David 16:06
Oh you did. You did, you did a book talk on this? I didn't remember that. That's really cool. And is that when you read it? You read it last year?
SARAH 16:13
No, I first read it. It was when I started.
David 16:15
Fifth grade two years ago. Okay.
Mike 16:17
Okay.
David 16:17
Really cool. Well, Mike, I have a couple of things that I like. There's a general thing. I the language. You know, we already talked about the I'm going to butcher this the steam monsters and the gray path and cars, whatever. Instead of
Mike 16:35
cars in the road
David 16:36
cars in the road
Mike 16:38
for you two legs.
David 16:39
Yeah, two legs. There's a lot of hyphenates like fresh kill. Yeah. Fresh I can kill is any of you know the prey that they eat, but it's fresh hyphen kill. There's a lot of hyphens in there. That's kind of
Mike 16:49
Hyphens
David 16:49
cool.
Mike 16:50
are good.
David 16:51
Hyphens are good. There's the fox cent specifically. Precent bloodbeat smell sense. Bloodbeat. Bloodbeat was in there. So I'm page 88. Look at up.
Mike 17:00
It's like their heartbeat.
David 17:01
Yeah, it's Lucas cats have these really cool senses. Well, they had the same senses we do, but they're much more heightened and their times and they can feel the blood beat of their prey and there's things like that that I thought were really cool. And I also love, you know, we do Indian princesses where we camp out a lot and on on our last camp out Lucy and Sarah and I actually walking to the bathroom and back saw deer walking around at night, and because they're used to humans walking around, I often would look in the woods and just imagine we've seen raccoons and possums and all kinds of things. What is it like to live in the woods? And this book sort of showed what that was like.
Mike 17:39
can. Absolutely. I thought they
David 17:41
Yes,
Mike 17:41
did a
David 17:41
you
Mike 17:42
really great job of showing that.
David 17:45
Yeah, absolutely. It was really, really interesting, and that was one of the many things I loved about it. Go ahead, Sarah.
SARAH 17:49
So Aaron Hunter is not one person. It's a brief of people who there's only one of them who isn't British. So anyway, in this book, sometimes, here it says odor and odor has ev.
David 18:03
Mm-hmm.
SARAH 18:04
But also in this book, the first time he wrote it, they put gray file with an E. And then like in further
Mike 18:11
Oh.
SARAH 18:12
book.
Mike 18:12
Yeah.
SARAH 18:13
The people who aren't British, let's write the next books, and they put gray file with an egg.
David 18:19
Oh, really? A is American, E is English.
Mike 18:22
Interesting.
David 18:23
I didn't even know that. I just always like A better. That's just me.
SARAH 18:26
I don't
Mike 18:26
know. I always like to eat better.
David 18:28
Yeah.
Mike 18:29
But then I really like to Aaron Gray from Silver Spoons and Buck Rogers.
David 18:34
OK. There you go.
Mike 18:35
Early '80s.
David 18:36
Mike, another thing that I liked was the, well, first of all, at one point I wrote, why are they all fighting? Like, were they fighting over? What's their wild cat? Well, no, but if I figured there that, why are they fighting? No, there is, into that being a reason. It's pretty basic, but do you remember what it was?
SARAH 18:55
So during leaf there, that's winter. There's like no fray. So all the cats want more territories so they can have more places to hunt for their fray. And you can't hunt on other claims territory, so it's bad to not have a lot because you don't have much hunting grounds. But also, there's a place called Sunning Rocks. And it's like near the boundary between clan and thunder quinn. And there are nice flat rops that are always in the sun, and it's a good place to tan yourself with any sun or something. So they always
David 19:24
fight over it. So
Mike 19:25
fair,
David 19:25
if
Mike 19:25
that's like fighting
David 19:26
it's
Mike 19:26
over the water park that's between your house and someone else's.
David 19:30
but why can't why can't we all just get along? Because they're wise.
Mike 19:33
We can't.
David 19:34
Because they're not really lucky friends and cats from other
Mike 19:36
clients. No, and which is it's funny because you really look at cats in general and they aren't like very good at being friends.
David 19:46
Yeah.
Mike 19:46
Like they might have one or two other cats that they get along with. But then seeing that this giant group, a flock, if will, of cats. A clan.
David 20:00
A clan. Hmm.
Mike 20:00
It's kind of weird thinking about a bunch of cats living together like that.
SARAH 20:05
Well.
Mike 20:06
Kitty pets.
SARAH 20:07
All the cats are like people. So they have feelings and stuff. So they're more likely to have friends because they actually have souls in his boat.
Mike 20:17
Yeah.
David 20:17
they're still.
Mike 20:17
Well,
David 20:18
because the star clan is heaven.
Mike 20:20
Yeah. It's really very cool. Just the whole building up of this world where these cats are all friends or
David 20:29
Yeah. Mm-hmm.
Mike 20:29
in each clan are sort of all friends. But
David 20:32
yes,
Mike 20:33
still all of the political divides that kind of mimic our society.
David 20:39
Yes, exactly. In the answer to my question, what are they fighting over? It's the basics survival. It's that simple. They're a scarcity.
Mike 20:47
And they want their people, their cats.
David 20:50
Hmm.
Mike 20:50
They want their friends to be the ones who survive.
David 20:53
Exactly.
Mike 20:54
Basically, just like us.
David 20:56
There is a specific favorite part that I wanted to bring up on page 65. It's when fire, Paul, I don't think he had yet hunted successfully his own prey yet. But he took a bite of one. And whichever she this is, right? It was a mouse. It was a mouse. It was juicy and tender and saying what the flavors of the forest. I thought that was so cool.
SARAH 21:24
There's a lot of... You know, I just get this stuff. I probably find that easy.
David 21:30
But I liked it for two reasons. One, it was just cool words, a cool way of describing it.
Mike 21:36
Yeah.
David 21:36
But I thought it was also a great way that when a kitty pet is making the transition, this was new. This was not
Mike 21:43
right.
David 21:44
Killer food that rusty ate, you know. And so I just I love that. That was a neat little mention, a little line.
Mike 21:52
One of my favorite parts and I don't have the book in front of me, so I can't tell you exactly where it was. But
David 21:58
We don't
Mike 21:59
later
David 21:59
judge.
Mike 21:59
in the book, Fire Pot is exploring somewhere out in the wilderness. Because, you know, it's where he lives now. And he comes across another cat. And I think is about to attack it. It realizes it smudge his old friend
David 22:20
Yes.
Mike 22:20
from next, you know, basically from next door.
David 22:23
Right.
Mike 22:24
And smudge is surprised to see him. And it's like, what happened to you? And kind of tells him a little bit. And then Fire Pot realizes why he didn't recognize him at first was because one of the things they said about an earlier cat that he had gone to the vet and was changed to when he came back and gained weight and was lazy.
David 22:48
Got it.
Mike 22:49
So that's I found that that to be very interesting. Kind of play on real life.
David 22:58
Yeah, that was really cool.
Mike 22:59
It's kind of like you've come so far. You're so different than what you were that you kind of almost forget it.
David 23:08
Yes. And it was for Fire Pot. Fire Pot. It was a way to look back. Oh, that's what I was. That's where I came from. That's what I would have been. He had made that trip.
Mike 23:19
Yeah. And I am so glad that I am out here living in the wild with all of these other cats
David 23:26
with my people. I mean, all of other cats,
Mike 23:28
my cat's bull
SARAH 23:31
in a later book. This is not spoiling. But it's just something when Fire Pot's about to die. He's not a pot. He's Oh,
Mike 23:39
I don't want to know. I don't want to know.
SARAH 23:41
It's not anything about how he died. He doesn't.
Mike 23:43
Okay.
SARAH 23:44
He's not a father. He's very old. So other cats are asking him if he has a year grips in his life. And he said the only thing that he wished he could have was writing his, his two legs that that he was Do you think they can't worry about
David 23:58
him? Well,
Mike 23:59
see if that it's the conscience.
David 24:02
The conscious.
SARAH 24:03
Also,
Mike 24:03
you know, being conscious of how you make other people and other beings feel.
SARAH 24:10
Do you know who princesses?
David 24:11
Princess. Do we know who
Mike 24:13
Oh,
David 24:13
princesses?
SARAH 24:14
to finish this arc case.
Mike 24:16
Okay.
David 24:16
Six
SARAH 24:17
minutes. Yeah,
Mike 24:17
I've already downloaded the second book from the library from my Hubla app.
David 24:23
Hubla.
Mike 24:24
Hubla.
David 24:27
*laughs* Uhm... Go all out.
Mike 24:32
So, I have already downloaded Book 2, and I started it, but then realized, oh my gosh, I have to read something else, which I think we talked about a couple of days ago, which at this point I don't even remember, because I want to get back into the firecats.
SARAH 24:49
[Sobbing]
Mike 24:50
what happened, you know, my kids... I
David 24:53
Yo,
Mike 24:53
said, "Hey, we're gonna read books that we read when you were young," and they picked books from when they were young, and then your kids picked the longest books known to man. Who's gonna choose Art of War? Or... Dr. Zavago?
David 25:08
I... I am so sorry.
Mike 25:11
*laughs*
David 25:11
I really
Mike 25:12
It's okay.
David 25:13
didn't realize I should
Mike 25:13
have said... 'All you want.'
David 25:15
When you were tiny and little, what was the favorite book that I read to you? I said, "Hey,
Mike 25:19
*laughs*
David 25:19
what was your favorite book?" I mean, like, "I got a Bible, I don't know." That's pretty cool.
SARAH 25:24
My favorite book was the dictionary. 3,000 pages one that we have, "Can I read?"
David 25:31
No, no, no, no. Sweetie, no, it's two-headed.
SARAH 25:34
But I actually thought, "Bee, it's pretty light."
David 25:36
You'll
SARAH 25:36
I... I heard it before. You'll
David 25:39
just look at
SARAH 25:40
But everybody wants big it is, and I can like, like, describe it.
David 25:43
Oh. These.
SARAH 25:45
And I've already mentioned it, so you have to.
David 25:47
If you drop it, you're out of
SARAH 25:48
the well. Okay.
Mike 25:53
Okay. *laughs*
David 25:53
It's all right along.
Mike 25:54
*crickets*
David 25:55
Leave the door open. Actually, it gives the breezes nice. Okay, here
Mike 25:58
Here
David 25:58
it is.
Mike 25:58
it is. The giant book.
David 26:01
It smells like old book. It is old book. It's Webster's New International Dictionary.
Mike 26:08
1927.
David 26:10
Second edition. Oh, can I get a bit of it? Latest Unabridged. I'm getting a different book. Lick with your knees. Not your back. Okay, yeah, go. Hurry, we'll book you getting. She's getting more books.
Mike 26:22
Oh, great.
David 26:23
Um, it's been at one point. Oh, 1954.
Mike 26:27
1954? Wow.
David 26:29
1954.
Mike 26:30
That's an
David 26:30
means.
Mike 26:30
old
David 26:31
Story?
Mike 26:31
dick.
David 26:32
The story here is a good friend of mine's mom, Gretchen, is the mom. She was in a sorority. She was a tridelt in college.
Mike 26:43
I don't know
David 26:43
And
Mike 26:43
what that
David 26:44
as an adult.
Mike 26:44
I'm not Greek.
David 26:45
It's Greek to me.
Mike 26:47
Okay.
David 26:48
She was a tridelt, Delta Delta Delta, which is a little prominent, women's sorority. She got involved as an adult, helping them out. And I think it was the SMU chapter.
Mike 27:00
Oh,
David 27:01
they had this dictionary in their library, and she thought that is an amazing dictionary. I doubt they used the dictionary or the library there. So she bought a cheaper one and swapped them so she could have this one.
Mike 27:17
That's awesome.
SARAH 27:19
So
Mike 27:19
my dance teacher, I believe, went to SMU.
David 27:22
Oh wow.
Mike 27:23
Joanna.
David 27:23
Okay.
Mike 27:24
She's pretty
SARAH 27:25
awesome. She is cool?
Mike 27:26
Yep.
SARAH 27:27
Are some of the biggest books I have?
Mike 27:29
Okay.
SARAH 27:29
They're not. Or your cat's book so just big. This is a little woman. It seems pretty short, but it's actually 500 pages because there's a lot of words.
Mike 27:37
And it's very tiny words.
David 27:39
Yeah. It's a lot of words.
SARAH 27:40
I write it over the summer. And then this is the fourth Harry Potter book. Very big.
Mike 27:45
That is very big.
SARAH 27:46
And then
Mike 27:46
don't
SARAH 27:46
this...
Mike 27:47
remember them being that
SARAH 27:48
big. Is an English
Mike 27:49
dictionary?
SARAH 27:49
French
Mike 27:49
I thought Harry Potter was very small.
SARAH 27:51
Well, the first three books are shorter, they're like half of this. Oh,
David 27:56
This is number
SARAH 27:57
And then the sixth book is a little smaller, and then the seventh book is kind of big.
Mike 28:00
Two books.
David 28:03
Anyway, this English French dictionary.
Mike 28:07
That's much smaller than the English English dictionary.
SARAH 28:10
Yeah.
David 28:11
Funny you should mention Mike, and I confirmed this with the language expert. English has seven times as many words as French.
Mike 28:19
Wow.
David 28:19
Seven times, like factor of seven.
Mike 28:22
First, Nizzle.
David 28:23
Mm-hmm. Indeedly.
SARAH 28:25
This is the fifth Harry Potter book.
David 28:27
Okay. Also pretty. Don't
Mike 28:28
Okay.
David 28:28
stack. That way they're going to fall. They will fall.
Mike 28:31
Well, if we stay here long enough, we can watch them fall. Let's see if we can watch that. But we have been on here for quite some time.
David 28:40
It is time to wrap it up.
Mike 28:41
It is. It
SARAH 28:42
Yep.
Mike 28:42
is. Sorry, Sarah.
SARAH 28:45
I'm glad to see you. Another one.
Mike 28:46
Sarah,
David 28:47
say that in the mix of people can hear you. And write me to another one.
Mike 28:50
Okay. Sarah, smile. Haul and oats. I've done my job.
David 28:56
Nice.
Mike 28:56
You're welcome, Tim.
David 28:58
Who's Tim?
Mike 29:00
Tim's our friend that we hang out with
SARAH 29:02
Is it a food
Mike 29:03
Tim sent me a phone number once.
David 29:06
time?
Mike 29:06
1-800-something-something-something, and said, call this number. And I was like, no, this is going to be some weird thing that you make me do. And he's like, yes, yes, it is.
David 29:19
Didn't we do pranks like in the 80s?
Mike 29:21
Yeah, exactly. So I like fine. I eventually called the number and it was the emergency a holonotes number where if you need you can call and listen to holonotes.
David 29:37
It
Mike 29:38
was epic. I tell you
David 29:39
epic.
Mike 29:40
I'll post that you know in the the notes down below or the notes. Over there.
David 29:48
Wherever you have your notes.
Mike 29:50
Exactly. I will put it in the notes.
David 29:53
In a note.
Mike 29:55
Well, Sarah, it has been lovely having you on this episode of Dad's On Books.
SARAH 30:01
Okay. do you
David 30:02
you say, Sarah?
SARAH 30:03
Thank you. I mean, you're welcome. Had I say the other one? Thank you and your
Mike 30:09
welcome. Thank you, Sarah, for being on the show with us today.
SARAH 30:12
Then you're welcome.
David 30:14
It was fun, Sarah. I really
Mike 30:15
it.
David 30:15
enjoyed
Mike 30:15
Me too.
SARAH 30:16
Let's do another one. Let me then if the already this book, then we can do it.
Mike 30:20
Okay. I
David 30:21
Yes.
Mike 30:22
will totally did that whole
SARAH 30:24
book
Mike 30:25
my friends have that book, but they have taken pages out of it. I think because it was falling apart
SARAH 30:33
do that.
Mike 30:34
They took pages out and wallpapered one of their bathrooms with pages of the dictionary.
David 30:40
That's cool.
Mike 30:41
It
David 30:41
Okay.
Mike 30:41
is very cool. You know, so you go in there like oh, let me learn a new word. Pustulate. Huh. Interesting.
SARAH 30:49
Why did you do the thing that you do? The page
Mike 30:52
that you why
SARAH 30:53
did you
Mike 30:54
do in that thing?
David 30:55
I bet the corner because I knew I wanted to talk about
Mike 30:57
page.
David 30:57
this
SARAH 30:58
That is illegal.
Mike 30:59
To a million pieces. Sorry.
SARAH 31:03
You can't bend the corners pages. I can't
David 31:06
earmark pages,
SARAH 31:07
just no.
David 31:08
Why?
Mike 31:08
I of neither why.
SARAH 31:10
What?
David 31:12
Books are meant to be earmarked and drawn upon and written in. They love it.
SARAH 31:15
This is why. Yeah,
David 31:18
but they fall out
Mike 31:19
quickly.
SARAH 31:19
Well, that's though. Yes,
David 31:20
they do.
SARAH 31:21
I'll have these look much since the summer.
David 31:23
Yeah, but someone's gonna read it and take that bookbork out. Anyway, we'll talk about marks on another podcast later. And this one.
Mike 31:30
Let's see.
David 31:30
That's pretty
Mike 31:30
This
David 31:30
cool.
Mike 31:31
would have been a perfect time for me to have my bookmarks available because they are for different kiddies on Post-it notes.
David 31:40
And
Mike 31:40
they are perfect for marking books. Would you want to talk about them on a podcast or a radio show or television talk show? Maybe Oprah will come on someday.
David 31:53
And how
Mike 31:54
Maybe.
David 31:54
do you spell perfect P-U-R-R-R-F-E-C-T? Perfect. All right, on that note, Sarah is wonderful having you on. Thanks for joining us, and we will do it again.
SARAH 32:09
Okay.
David 32:10
Nice.
SARAH 32:11
Before we leave, I have a comment. Okay,
Mike 32:13
please.
SARAH 32:13
Before something to the world before we go.
Mike 32:16
Okay.
SARAH 32:17
Don't do the corner thing with your books and racism is bad.
Mike 32:22
I love that. That's a great way, Sarah.
David 32:26
Mm-hm.
SARAH 32:27
Welcome.
David 32:28
