David And Delaney (00:17.514)
Hmm.

Mike (00:23.054)
You

Mike (00:27.906)
Well hello and welcome. I'm good, how are you?

David And Delaney (00:29.961)
Hello, Mike, are you?

Mike (00:35.052)
Awesome! Glad to hear it!

David And Delaney (00:39.966)
Yay!

Mike (00:41.846)
Alright, so here we are on another episode. Whoa, wait a second. Is there somebody next to you?

David And Delaney (00:43.301)
Hi. Who's that?

David And Delaney (00:50.569)
There is indeed!

Mike (00:50.956)
Is there some, okay. Wasn't sure you heard me there.

David And Delaney (00:56.213)
I'm a teenager.

Mike (00:56.696)
That's so. You're a teenager. How old are you? Are you allowed? Are you allowed to be on this show?

David And Delaney (01:02.101)
She is.

David And Delaney (01:07.765)
14. I don't know. Should we check the bylaws and the? Yeah, do we even sort of code for this stuff? I don't know.

Mike (01:13.732)
I think it just says that people related to us can be on the show.

Is she related to us? Okay, good, good. Well, we should just control Z that, undo it, back to the beginning and start over.

David And Delaney (01:22.74)
I'm good then. I'm covered. Yeah, she's my daughter.

David And Delaney (01:33.683)
Yes we should.

Mike (01:35.416)
Yes. So Delaney, it's nice to see you again. why don't you tell us, thank you. Why don't you tell us the book we're going to read today or the book we read for today.

David And Delaney (01:42.229)
Nice to see

David And Delaney (01:53.321)
today we're... what do you... We talk about it. Today we're talking about The Lightning Thief by Rick Gordon. It's the first in the Percy Jackson and the Olympian series. Percy Jackson!

Mike (02:09.22)
Percy Jackson. And here I have a copy of it that I read. That, uh, and Ruby was super excited that I finally read it. I only brought one because that's the one I read. You brought all of them because you read all of them, but have you read like the red, I don't know, chamber or whatever the heck it is past Percy Jackson? That's the one.

David And Delaney (02:16.777)
Me too!

David And Delaney (02:30.165)
Yeah.

David And Delaney (02:36.213)
The red pyramid?

Mike (02:39.108)
I knew it was something.

David And Delaney (02:39.537)
I actually, I haven't read that. I need to eventually, but I haven't as of now. Well, how many Percy Jackson books are there that you have not read?

Mike (02:43.406)
Okay.

David And Delaney (02:53.909)
Three, I think. Okay. Out of what? 25 or 30? 30 plus. Wow! Okay. And still believe. Me too! I got one!

Mike (02:56.183)
Okay.

Mike (03:00.834)
Whoa. Well, I got one.

Woohoo!

David And Delaney (03:07.061)
Delaney did warn me when we decided to read and talk about this book. I think she warned both of us that we need to read this first one and read no more because we will not stop until they're all read.

Mike (03:14.926)
Yes.

Mike (03:24.937)
did she hear about Little House on the Prairie?

David And Delaney (03:29.596)
did I tell you? Yes.

Mike (03:29.71)
how we read one book and by the end of the week I had all seven of them done, because I could not stop.

David And Delaney (03:38.931)
He could not stop. He's like the book down. He's like the Terminator. He will not stop. I don't know who that is. There's no stopping.

Mike (03:44.952)
I will not stop.

Get in the car if you want to leave.

David And Delaney (03:51.093)
Okay. do want to leave. Where are you taking me? Yeah. So, this is the second episode where we have a guest and, it was my turn to pick a daughter. So I picked my eldest and for her, for which book are we going to read and discuss with her? This was a no brainer. You want to tell the origin story of how you discovered Percy Jackson?

Yeah. Go ahead. So when I was littler, I six, maybe seven, I got really into Greek mythology by reading a- yeah, I don't want to mispronounce the name. reading Dolere's book, You Can Make Me. Yes! So I started reading a ton of mythology, especially that book. It took me a while as I was about seven.

Mike (04:39.652)
Greek Myths

David And Delaney (04:50.665)
but I got through it. And on my eighth birthday, my aunt decided to give me The Lightning Thief. I started reading that and Percy Jackson has been my favorite series since.

Mike (04:53.347)
Nice.

Mike (05:03.926)
Awesome. And you've read most of the 30 plus books.

David And Delaney (05:04.862)
I love it.

David And Delaney (05:10.108)
Most of them, yes.

Mike (05:11.392)
Okay, I hear about 10 % you're down.

10 % to go. Yeah.

David And Delaney (05:18.537)
Yes, that's awesome. Thanks.

Mike (05:20.878)
Sorry. I was math-ing. know it's, it's, it's, it's later in the day. And yeah. Yes, and.

David And Delaney (05:24.224)
You're laughing. I didn't laugh.

David And Delaney (05:30.42)
Yes.

I didn't know math-ing was a verb. So that was pretty cool. Anything you'd do to try hard enough? yeah, totally. My bad.

Mike (05:37.174)
absolutely. What is wrong with you?

Heck yeah. Thank you, Delaney. You're smart.

So,

David And Delaney (05:52.245)
When you said she was smart, I was going to say takes after her mother.

Mike (05:58.914)
Yeah, well, your mother is very smart.

David And Delaney (06:00.543)
but I was too slow. Yes. So I've been hearing about these books for many, many years, obviously. And my other two daughters have also read many of them. So I was excited to finally read it and I didn't get it until last Friday. And I got it. And Delaney was saying, daddy, you better start reading the book. I'm like, yeah, I'll get to it. And I opened the book and I'm like, okay, there's no pictures.

And then I turned over and it was 370 something pages. I can check. And so, yeah. Yeah, I think you're right. don't think you're wrong. 375.

Mike (06:31.748)
Ohhhh

Mike (06:37.828)
I noticed that too. thought it was like 378. I could be wrong.

Mike (06:46.454)
I was going to say 375, man. But then there's, you know, stuff afterwards. So, but there's, there's a lot of stuff afterward. So I have a similar, story with this, except that Kim, read this to Stella and Ruby when they would, they would get in the shower, take shower. And while they were showering.

David And Delaney (06:48.745)
Go see God!

David And Delaney (06:53.875)
That's true. It's the prologue for the rest of the year. Yes.

Mike (07:15.406)
Kim would read the book. So one would be in the shower. One would be listening. Then they swap places and then, you know, chapter or three or however many they would get through. So for me, reading the book is actually, almost felt like I was reading it again because I knew parts of it. But then I was like, but there's so much, there's more that I'm missing. And then.

David And Delaney (07:36.649)
Mmm.

Mike (07:45.348)
I read it and I was like, wait, nope. I pretty much remember it. All of the, the, major points. I remembered. I just thought there was more time in between like the bus.

David And Delaney (07:56.607)
Mm-hmm.

Mike (08:05.72)
Can you hear me now?

Okay. So hopefully it just recorded. But so I lost the between from the bus to the gnome statue, statuary, statuary, something like that.

David And Delaney (08:09.845)
Yes, but I think I lost you after a bus.

David And Delaney (08:19.346)
Yeah.

Mike (08:32.788)
Exactly. And so I was like, wait, I thought, are you sure there's not something that happened in between there? then I was, I was wrong that I thought that that was true.

Mike (08:53.988)
boy. So.

David And Delaney (08:59.593)
What'd think?

Mike (09:02.628)
I loved it. but I remember hearing parts of it going, Ooh, that sounds interesting. I'm going to read that someday. And now I have, and you're right. Only read one. If you're going to get on a show and talk about it, because I could have, I could be up all night. Every night. I got it before you, because it was already in our house.

and you, you had a copy in your house too, right?

David And Delaney (09:38.675)
I did, Delaney said I had to get my own copy because her copy was completely marked and annotated and stuff. That and also I don't trust anyone with my books.

Mike (09:51.544)
Wow. Wow.

David And Delaney (09:52.721)
Okay, especially especially a book from the box set that I have with the matching cover

Mike (09:59.054)
That's Whoa.

David And Delaney (10:02.441)
quite fair. But I also do like to mark my books and I also like having my own. all was good except I wasn't listening to her when she said, you better start reading it. When are we recording? Tuesday. Okay. She was so right. yeah. I'm a fast reader.

Mike (10:04.27)
Quite fair.

Mike (10:18.055)
I got time.

Yeah. Yeah. I actually started it on Sunday because I was on a flight home and I got about two and a half hours reading on the plane and then came home. think I might've eaten some dinner and then read the rest and went to sleep at one a.m.

David And Delaney (10:45.873)
Mm. And I started reading it.

Mike (10:48.3)
It's a good thing I didn't have to work in the morning.

David And Delaney (10:51.379)
Yes. Well, I started reading it also on Sunday and I did, think at one point text you, Hey, I'm not going to finish the book by Tuesday. We need to reschedule. And then I started reading it. I thought, no, no, no, no, we're not rescheduling. So I texted you and said, just kidding. We're on. But I had no plans on Monday. And so I spend a lot of time reading it on Monday, but also sometimes I wake up early.

And I thought if I wake up early, I'm going to get up and read that happened this morning at four. I got up before four. Yep. I got up before four and I just read and I brewed a cup of coffee, put on comfy clothes, sat in a comfy chair and spent two hours in the darkness by myself. And you've heard things because of Kim reading it to the girls, et cetera. And you know me and clean slate. I just know from asking, clean slate kids.

Mike (11:24.26)
Whoa. Four A.

Mike (11:41.923)
Yes.

Mike (11:45.737)
Mr. Clean Slate.

David And Delaney (11:49.245)
I remember asking Delaney about it a little bit and the other girls and Delaney basically said, it's a modern day boy, picture that the Greek myths and the Greek gods are occurring today. That is all I knew. And except for two more things. Now that Delaney knew I was reading it, she said, you have to read the chapter titles first. said, no, I don't want to know anything. I don't want to know anything. She goes, trust me, you need to read those titles.

And I've learned already just in the past week when she says, trust me, I should trust her. And I read through the titles and my first thought was, I'm going to love this book.

Mike (12:31.172)
Yeah, I agree.

David And Delaney (12:33.589)
I Mr. Worden had me at the title of chapter one. It's the contents. I accidentally vaporize my pre-algebra teacher. And I thought, I'm going to love this. Cause he, you read these titles and you really have no idea what's happening.

Mike (12:47.168)
Absolutely.

David And Delaney (12:53.769)
And that's really smart. But then we'll also.

Mike (12:55.534)
Well, and it's a great teaser. Like, so you're going to ride a zebra to Las Vegas.

David And Delaney (13:05.319)
And Grover is gonna-

Mike (13:05.86)
Chapter 16, we take a zebra to Vegas. That's crazy. Who takes a zebra to Vegas?

David And Delaney (13:09.075)
Yes.

Well, we do.

Well, and Grover unexpectedly loses his pants. You only have to get as far as chapter three to discover whatever the heck that means. But can I be honest with you?

Mike (13:16.68)
my bad.

Mike (13:28.59)
Yes.

David And Delaney (13:29.641)
Maybe because I was tired, maybe my own ADD or whatever combination of letters I have. You have ADD. I have ADD? Yes. I'm the one with ADHD. You have the H. Yes. I got no H? No, you don't. Okay, cool. So comment. I see what you did there. Combination of my ADD and the fact that I have been diagnosed with a pretty acute case of being a 57 year old male. I would forget stuff.

Mike (13:44.088)
Heck no.

David And Delaney (13:58.653)
And in many,

Mike (13:58.978)
I don't think that's a cute case.

David And Delaney (14:01.986)
no, that's one word.

acute. Like it means severe or very drastic or hyperbolic. Hyperbolic?

Mike (14:05.38)
my bad.

Mike (14:11.395)
Oh, okay, my bad.

David And Delaney (14:15.145)
Get back on the screen, Dee. You you just, there you go. Okay. You okay?

Mike (14:20.279)
This is what we do though. Especially when we have people on. We just go crazy. And it's a people.

David And Delaney (14:24.853)
There's a people. There's a people. No, but what happened was more than once I made a chapter and I forgot what it was called. And then something had happened. go, yeah, this chapter. yeah. Or I'd remember and I'm like, Grover hasn't lost his pants. What's going on? So I had really had fun with the chapter things. And then I started just ignoring the chapter titles. Cause you know,

Anna Beth does obedience school? I don't remember ever seeing that. I read the chapter.

Mike (14:56.981)
Right. I, to be honest with you, I never read the chapters names until you said it. And I was like, my God, a God buys us cheeseburgers. How awesome.

David And Delaney (15:12.469)
You know, I'm Catholic. We're Catholic and our God is an awesome God to quote one of our songs. He has never, ever bought me a cheeseburger. Did you just compare God to Aries? I'm just saying our God with a capital G. I'm not comparing him to anyone. I'm just saying he's never bought me cheeseburgers.

Mike (15:15.299)
Ugh.

Mike (15:25.699)
I guess he's not that awesome.

David And Delaney (15:36.425)
He's also never deposited pretty much a death sentence into your backpack. You mean my orange backpack? Sure. I can't remember what color it was. You don't remember?

Mike (15:48.931)
David And Delaney (15:50.038)
I am here to remind you, for those of you just listening, I have a giant orange backpack. Spoiler alert, there's one in the book. You're sure it was orange? Yeah.

Mike (16:02.275)
spoils.

Mike (16:07.095)
I don't remember it being orange, but what? Excuse me, what was that you say?

David And Delaney (16:07.293)
I did not review it.

David And Delaney (16:12.617)
Leave out again? I did not reread the book for this.

Mike (16:17.579)
Okay, pop quiz.

David And Delaney (16:19.445)
Alright, hit me. We're on.

Mike (16:22.111)
On page 48, what was the last thing that was said? And you... I know, that's why I picked it.

David And Delaney (16:27.315)
I don't think I could tell you that even if I did reread it.

I was gonna say, so it's okay that I don't know what the heck you're talking about?

Mike (16:33.485)
See, you could have just said, what?

David And Delaney (16:37.333)
Cause I read that page. I read that page yesterday and I didn't know. So you scared me, Mike.

Mike (16:38.615)
Cuz that is th-

Mike (16:46.337)
What would you say if, if somebody asks you that in real life? What's the first word out of your mouth going to be?

David And Delaney (16:56.085)
I, depending on who it is, I'd probably walk away.

Mike (16:59.691)
okay.

David And Delaney (17:00.853)
Mike (17:03.084)
You're not helping me here. It's what? What? That is the last word on page 48.

David And Delaney (17:16.041)
We have the same version, you're right. We all have the same version.

Mike (17:21.495)
Whoa, do we? Let's check the is bins.

David And Delaney (17:22.037)
Ours have the same cover.

David And Delaney (17:26.633)
The what?

Mike (17:27.523)
The isbin page. What is the isbin page? So this I'm, I don't know. It doesn't say first paperback edition, April, 2006.

David And Delaney (17:30.985)
Yeah, this page is done.

Mike (17:46.309)
I do love, and I love going to this page because it's just so funny, the little weird things you learn. You know, sometimes you learn what kind of medium is used in art, but in this one, I find this book is set in 13 point Centaur MT.

David And Delaney (18:11.964)
Yup.

Mike (18:13.644)
So that is just funny that the font is called Centaur.

David And Delaney (18:18.143)
Yep. And is that a real font? Did he invent it for this book? Like that is a real font. It is. I think you can find it on Mooring. OK, I've looked for it on Google. It's not there.

Mike (18:27.416)
Yeah, yeah, I'm pretty sure I've seen it. it must've been in a Microsoft office thing.

So yeah, so weird, interesting things. should we get past the first page?

David And Delaney (18:47.356)
The is-been page on the table of contents? We've mailed both. We only have 375 to go or whatever.

Mike (18:51.844)
We've got those. All right, 12 more minutes.

David And Delaney (19:02.175)
So there are so many things that I loved about this book. And one of them was not once, but twice. They refer to certain half-bloods or heroes throughout history that did amazing things. And they mentioned Orpheus, Hercules, and Houdini.

Mike (19:23.052)
Yes. But then at some other point they mentioned it may be the same too, but then the last one is George Washington. So I've.

David And Delaney (19:32.423)
Yeah. Well, yeah, they mentioned the same three in two places. And then, yes, they also mentioned George Washington. I love it.

Mike (19:38.658)
Yeah. So it is funny. Like I love how they take some, take people from our history and put them into the book. Cause it is cool.

David And Delaney (19:48.873)
Yes, it is really cool. Another funny quote that I absolutely loved. First of all, I wrote, the very first thing I wrote is I totally relate to him from the beginning.

Mike (20:00.716)
Absolutely.

David And Delaney (20:01.748)
And I don't know why, except that sarcasm and he keeps messing up and he's really human. And it reminded me of Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye. Because he's at a prep school, he's from New York, all the adults, and this is why I still think that all the adults are humans. The adults are not humans. Yeah, we gotta make sure that if you have not read and you intend to read

Mike (20:12.26)
Cool. Yep.

Mike (20:23.748)
back in the good old days.

David And Delaney (20:31.082)
this book, do not listen to this podcast episode until you've done so. Step away now. That's true. No, we won't. No, I just.

Mike (20:35.588)
Well, hopefully we won't give too much away, just teasers. Although I just have to say, I love his nemesis at the very beginning.

David And Delaney (20:48.894)
Yes. Clarice? No, Mrs. Mrs. Dodd. The pre-algebra teacher.

Mike (20:55.562)
Actually, even before she is introduced, Nancy Bobo fit.

David And Delaney (20:58.888)
Nancy! Yes! That's right! They're Cheeto Freckles.

Mike (21:06.41)
Every time I thought I read it, I'm like, okay, please stop. I have to stop thinking about Star Wars.

David And Delaney (21:14.441)
that's

A note to the audience. I've never seen Star Wars. But you've never seen Star Wars and how did you know that? you went to school with boys. Yeah. That's right. That'll do it. Yes, indeed.

Mike (21:21.966)
Thank you for, thank you for getting that.

Mike (21:31.394)
Yeah, I mean, there's

Mike (21:35.98)
Yes, indeed. Anyway, go ahead.

David And Delaney (21:40.726)
One of my favorite, many favorite moments occurs on page 156 when he's basically, they're basically saying his destiny is to save Western civilization. And at one point they're like, they tell him his mentor, Kieran, Chiron? Chiron. It's kind of.

Mike (22:06.98)
Chiron. Chiron.

David And Delaney (22:09.224)
You can pronounce it any way you'd like with most of the names in this. I mean, it's not like we have an ancient Greek pronunciation guide to assist us. That's kind of chironic.

David And Delaney (22:20.544)
Wait, come back! Wait, come back! Come back! Come back! Anyway, come back!

Mike (22:20.856)
Wow.

Mike (22:26.636)
I would leave too, but I can't unplug, then I won't hear you come back. So I guess I could have gone,

David And Delaney (22:37.814)
Wait, wait! Wow! Okay, come back! It is Mike! What? It is Mike! I know that. I can see that. So... Yes. I love it.

Mike (22:37.966)
Oop.

Mike (22:52.804)
How about now?

I gotta switch back to.

Nope, it's not that one. It's that one. there I can hear you now. I was so, I got so into that, that when I moved and tried to go slink down on my elevator, I pulled out my headphones.

which, you know, it just went, started going right into my speaker. However, I have these on so I could not hear the speaker very well. They're in-ear monitor things.

David And Delaney (23:35.125)
yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I got you.

So what I was going to say is on page 156, when Kieran, Kiron? Kiron. Kiron. When Kiron basically and friends tell him that the fate of Western civilization is in his hands, and they tell him to relax. And Percy says, relax. I'm very relaxed.

Mike (23:43.32)
Yep.

Chiron.

David And Delaney (24:06.228)
I just thought that was very funny. A little bit of sarcasm. there is so much sarcasm in Percy Jackson. So much. The community calls him Persassy. Yep, Persassy. I love it. Yeah. It's true. and then when Persassy's, when Persassy's fix and leave summer camp,

Mike (24:08.164)
Mm-mm.

Mike (24:13.198)
There's so much. love it. It's.

Mike (24:23.734)
Sassy. That's awesome. I love it.

David And Delaney (24:31.434)
They send him off and he's like, just your typical summer camp send off by your typical centaur. You know, that's just, I just love that. He's so funny and it is so funny. And sarcasm does come from the Greek roots, meaning? Tearing of the flesh.

Mike (24:37.454)
Yeah.

Mike (24:49.284)
Whoa. Cool.

David And Delaney (24:50.324)
Yeah. He says that way too much. I do. But this is one of times it's actually relevant because we're Greek stuff. How many times has it been relevant?

Mike (25:01.72)
this time.

David And Delaney (25:03.83)
Yeah. I like this book. We have the book. Mike, what are some of your favorite parts?

Mike (25:08.13)
and I cannot lie.

Mike (25:14.136)
Well, I stuck a piece of something, this thing, that's, don't even know what it was from holding something together. maybe it was bananas. I'm bananas, but on, think 271, there was something, but now I was hoping you would continue talking for a minute so I figure out what it was, but I do like the seahorse and the Mako shark whisked off.

David And Delaney (25:37.43)
Find it.

Mike (25:43.756)
and started playing something that looked like tag.

David And Delaney (25:46.802)
Hahaha

Mike (25:48.325)
The underwater lady smiled at me. You know, it's just, there, there are some really funny, silly little things that I liked. So yeah, that was pretty much, I think it's just, this is the part that I liked.

Mike (26:13.292)
All of it, but I couldn't tell you, I couldn't tell you. I started like putting things in like, I got bookmarks. I'm putting bookmarks in. And then they all fell out. And I was like, whoa.

David And Delaney (26:14.511)
No!

David And Delaney (26:26.183)
my!

Wait, can I say something? You're supposed to say something. would like to dedicate this episode to Grover's Uncle Ferdinand. May he return from the woods.

Mike (26:35.074)
You're supposed to say everything. Tell us all about it.

Mike (26:43.084)
Yes.

David And Delaney (26:47.784)
I thought Uncle Ferdinand was one of the statues at Auntie Em's Emporium. Yes, he is. The rest of you don't know that. There is not. That's the point of the dedication that someday he might.

Mike (26:48.836)
Is there a way to come back?

Mike (26:58.756)
fair. guess, should I go back and cut that out? Like I always cut things out.

David And Delaney (27:08.694)
Ready?

Mike (27:10.754)
I'm not going to anyway, so.

David And Delaney (27:12.527)
okay.

Mike (27:15.684)
Usually it's your father who says something ridiculous and I'm like, I'll just go and cut that out and post. And I don't. Never.

David And Delaney (27:23.092)
And he never does. The more ridiculous it is, the greater the chance it stays in. I did learn something about this reading this book. learned something I did not know. Yeah. Tin cans are vegetables. So are enchiladas. Don't forget that. And enchiladas. Yep. And tin cans. Those are vegetables. Yep. And don't play hacky sack with apples.

Mike (27:33.784)
Really? What is that?

Mike (27:38.85)
Yes. cheese enchiladas. Gotta love them. Yeah. Yep.

David And Delaney (27:52.788)
I didn't reread this. Yeah. Yes. That was hilarious.

Mike (27:52.95)
especially if your best friends have goats.

Yeah, yeah. We're, we're playing hacky sack. It was going really well. And till we kicked it to Grover and he ate the apple. Damn it.

David And Delaney (28:08.767)
Yep. Like goat boys can do. Dang it, I hate it when my secretly half goat friend eats my hacky sack.

Mike (28:21.156)
Do you have a half goat friend?

David And Delaney (28:24.382)
I mean, I don't think so.

Mike (28:26.358)
Okay, just thought I'd ask. You never know.

David And Delaney (28:29.94)
Have you ever seen Ian with his shoes off? No, but I've seen him hauling a 30 pound tuba. I don't think there's any way he's half goat. Okay. Okay.

Mike (28:33.464)
Huh.

Mike (28:39.65)
No, no, not if not with shoes on. I mean, probably do it with without the shoes, but wearing shoes, I don't see someone carrying a tuba. No.

David And Delaney (28:47.465)
Yeah.

David And Delaney (28:52.232)
No. Yeah, no, that thing is very heavy.

Mike (28:56.267)
Indeed.

David And Delaney (28:57.43)
or else you'd be tempted to eat it.

Mike (29:00.196)
It's not tin.

David And Delaney (29:03.4)
Yeah. But it's shiny and it's metal. Is that not a vegetable? It also is very strong metal. that's the point of Tim. Okay.

Mike (29:10.392)
Yeah, yeah, and tin cans are crunchy. It's like, you know, eating a deep fried okra.

David And Delaney (29:20.51)
I love okra.

Mike (29:24.324)
Trader Joe's.

David And Delaney (29:25.791)
Nice!

Mike (29:27.18)
I keep it in my office just in case I get hungry. need some salt.

David And Delaney (29:30.89)
This portion of the show brought to you by Trader Joe's Deep Fried Okra at its best.

Mike (29:33.54)
Trader Joe's. Thanks. Hopefully somebody from Trader Joe's is listening and sends us some money to keep us going because we don't have a lot. I don't know. Yeah. We need a sponsor too. So if anyone out there wants to sponsor us, we're available and we're cheap.

David And Delaney (29:40.618)
Big check. A sponsorship deal.

David And Delaney (29:47.83)
That's true. No, don't. We're not working on it. We do!

David And Delaney (29:55.604)
We are. And we will shamelessly self promote whatever it is you want us to promote if you sponsor us. Yep. I will tell my teenage friends about it.

Mike (30:00.357)
Absolutely. Uh-huh.

Mike (30:07.127)
I'm scared now.

David And Delaney (30:10.432)
That's a demographic. So I brought my sword. Where's mine? Where's mine?

Mike (30:17.044)
nice. I think I have a feeling it's a better sword than that, but it does have a cap.

David And Delaney (30:27.988)
Yeah, well, I have my big pen with my cap. So, sorry, not in front of the kids. I took the cap off. I'm not going to do that. I'm older than Percy at this point. that's a point. Okay. By two years. Also, Delaney, probably don't remember this. Mike, did you catch this? At one point when his mom is getting the bean dip. no, I remember. For the poker guy, the stepfather. Smelly Gabe. Smelly Gabe.

Mike (30:33.144)
and

Mike (30:51.566)
Be in there.

Mike (30:55.746)
Yeah, smelly Gabe. I bet he rides a smelly bus. With some smelly girl.

David And Delaney (30:58.354)
She... Yes, well, she's gonna distract Smelly Gabe when he calls for the bean dip and she's gonna distract him and she tells Percy, don't worry, I'm making a seven layer dip. I do in fact remember that. I remember everything.

Mike (31:21.06)
you remember why he's talking about seven layer depth?

David And Delaney (31:25.278)
because he makes it all the time.

Mike (31:27.204)
ALL THE TIME.

David And Delaney (31:28.926)
All the

Mike (31:30.742)
And I, I love, you do make it a lot, but that's okay because it's good. I remember many, many years of watching Superbowl commercials and eating seven layer dip.

David And Delaney (31:35.977)
It's good. Yeah.

Mike (31:48.012)
Many a year. And I think we may have seen a little bit of the games, but I couldn't tell you anything about them.

David And Delaney (31:49.312)
bit bit.

David And Delaney (31:54.846)
It's all about the commercials and the dip.

Mike (31:56.64)
Absolutely. Especially when somebody you know might be in a commercial that's airing.

David And Delaney (32:09.142)
Anyway, so that was fun too. I'm like, yay, seven layer dip. knew I liked Percy's mom. Now I like her more. Yeah, I've been making that dip, kids. Those of who don't know me as long as Delaney and Mike have known me, I've been making a seven layer dip since the 80s, the 1980s.

Mike (32:16.504)
She's pretty cool.

Mike (32:24.74)
1980s. He's not that old. He didn't run around with Laura.

David And Delaney (32:27.526)
No, No,

Mike (32:37.412)
Sorry. Bye, Dad.

Mike (32:53.208)
Yeah. Well, I read it in two sittings and whether that had been, you know, two weeks ago or last night, that's how I would have read it. Because it's like, couldn't, I didn't want to start it. So I'm sure that there's some psychological thing going on that I just don't want to start things because then

David And Delaney (33:07.926)
Mm-hmm.

Mike (33:23.64)
I have to finish them, but I know I'm going to get into it, you know? And that's how I feel about this book.

David And Delaney (33:28.98)
Yes. I feel very called out at that.

Mike (33:35.001)
What?

David And Delaney (33:36.726)
I feel very called out at that.

Mike (33:38.882)
Yeah. Well, I'm not calling you out. I'm calling myself out. I don't like to start things, but when I do, I'm all in. All in.

David And Delaney (33:50.71)
That's the motto of Keller High School this year, I think. Is it? Yeah, I think so. I'm all in.

Mike (33:53.688)
All in.

David And Delaney (34:01.226)
Nice. Thanks. All right.

Mike (34:02.617)
Hmm. I'm, I'm trying to find something to say about that and I can't find anything. We should probably record some other time than 7 PM.

David And Delaney (34:08.17)
Yeah.

David And Delaney (34:16.574)
You're absolutely right. Yeah. Yeah, no doubt.

Mike (34:20.814)
But, but Delaney, you go to school. And that's when we have time to record. So I blame you.

David And Delaney (34:31.23)
Yeah, sorry about that.

Mike (34:33.838)
That's cool. It's cool. We like you.

So what else do we got?

David And Delaney (34:42.138)
that's all for me. I just really, really, really love the book. This is one of those books that kind of makes you want to be a writer, you know?

Mike (34:52.568)
Yeah, it's a great story. for me, think it's, it's, it's, hey, it's interesting and the plot moves along well. But if you know anything about Greek mythology, even just that Zeus was a god.

David And Delaney (35:09.792)
Mm-hmm.

David And Delaney (35:15.246)
No, it's not.

Mike (35:15.484)
You're going to get something out of this because you were like, I know that Zeus guy. Yeah, totally. Totally. I could read about this. And then you're like, maybe I know about, Mars and Poseidon. And maybe all of a sudden I'm, wait.

David And Delaney (35:29.622)
Besides...

Mike (35:37.284)
Percy is short for something?

David And Delaney (35:41.28)
Wow, Perseus, you got you.

Mike (35:42.937)
Yeah.

Mike (35:46.788)
Persibly, persibly.

David And Delaney (35:51.734)
Wait, come back. That's awesome. Well, since I'm the master pronouncer, you said Perseus. I thought it was Perseus. It's your pick. Oh, okay. We don't exactly have pronunciation guides for these names. No, we don't. And speaking of which, this dude, the sword, the pen sword, it's Riptide. Or Anacronythmos.

Mike (35:52.866)
Woohoo! I got her to leave again! That's two!

Mike (36:16.334)
pen sword, Riptide, which I totally remember from the eighties as a TV show that two guys lived on a boat or something.

David And Delaney (36:25.44)
Totally. Or more recently a slong with a guy playing a ukulele kind of thing.

Mike (36:26.914)
Totally.

Mike (36:31.188)
that was called that?

David And Delaney (36:32.704)
But, Riptide, No, that's not, that's not the right one. it's not? That's not the right one that anyone listening to this will know. Okay. Correction, any young people listening to this will know. They'll know the one by Vinge Joy that goes, lately running down to the Riptide turning a light to the dark. That's it.

Mike (36:35.172)
Nice dancing.

Mike (36:45.933)
Okay.

Mike (36:52.292)
that's the words? Wow. Interesting. I'm intrigued. Me neither. Yeah.

David And Delaney (36:57.43)
I'm not a big words guy. You know me. But Riptide is the name of the pen sword. But the Greek name is Anaclusmos. How do you pronounce this? Anaclusmos. Anaclusmos? Yeah, that could be it. I think.

Mike (37:09.71)
Don't even.

Mike (37:20.59)
Yeah, just, Klaus sounds good to me.

That's what I took away from it. And a Klaus mouse. And a Klaus mouse. And we're back.

David And Delaney (37:34.416)
I love it! Merry Clausmas! Nice!

Mike (37:38.232)
Marika, that I was trying to figure out how to get that in. I was trying to make a Santa reference and I just couldn't piece it all together. Thanks. I don't know. I was reaching too far instead of thinking about what was just right there.

David And Delaney (37:45.301)
Me too.

Wait, why?

David And Delaney (37:56.544)
There's 99 days till Christmas.

Mike (37:59.172)
99 days. Yes.

David And Delaney (38:01.888)
We're in double-didge, man.

Mike (38:05.283)
and a beer on the wall.

David And Delaney (38:07.254)
I do have one question for Delaney if you remember when you first read this book. I don't, but go ahead. No, I remember reading it.

Mike (38:17.272)
was that, was that actually the question?

David And Delaney (38:20.481)
I know.

Mike (38:22.118)
Okay, okay good

David And Delaney (38:23.53)
I've got more. No. So, this goes back to what you said, Mike. You said, if you know anything at all about Greek mythology, whether like, Hey, Zeus is a God. or on the other end of the spectrum, you're like a PhD in. Civic classics or whatever. When you read this Delaney, exactly. When you read this Delaney, had read the Inger and Edgar Dallaire's book of Greek myths. Did you, do you remember like pretty much knowing who all these characters were?

Mike (38:40.717)
zoosisms.

David And Delaney (38:53.268)
Or did you have to like figure out who some of them were? Or did you have to go look stuff up? I don't think I knew how to use the internet when I was eight. I'm pretty sure there were a few that I didn't get, but managed to scramble together some context and figure it out. But most of them, yes, you did know. Very cool. And you've since learned a lot more. So much more. Mike, how about you?

Mike (39:12.196)
Yeah. I'm.

Mike (39:17.764)
And you had the myth book. Did you? Myth? Where's the myth? Myth? Myth? Yes? Yes?

David And Delaney (39:23.818)
Yeah. Miss? Excuse me, miss? that one, yeah.

Mike (39:30.786)
Yes, Greek myths by old Greek guys.

David And Delaney (39:32.394)
We missed this.

David And Delaney (39:37.554)
Inger and Edgrid D'Aulere. Okay. Mike, much did you know?

Mike (39:41.495)
Anyway, yeah.

I know a fair amount and I don't know exactly where it came from. know that, I know I read some books about mythology when I was younger and that's all I, I don't even remember what those books were, but I totally like all of these people. totally like, I know all of them. Well, maybe there's one or two that I was like, don't know. Mrs. Dodds.

David And Delaney (39:47.51)
Mm-hmm.

Mike (40:13.836)
I don't remember a Greek anything about Mrs. Dodds.

David And Delaney (40:20.214)
Yeah, me neither. I don't remember her. I don't remember any of being missus's at all.

Mike (40:23.203)
No.

Mike (40:28.374)
No. Was she missed dots? I don't know. She was very dodgy.

David And Delaney (40:31.957)
I think she might have been.

And who would marry her? I mean, I hate to say it. That is, that is really... Mrs. fact. It is Mrs. It is. There you go.

Mike (40:38.18)
She sounds like a witch.

Mike (40:44.654)
That's what I thought. Man, I got it.

David And Delaney (40:48.562)
What happened to Mr. Dodds? That's what I want to know.

Mike (40:51.684)
I think it was the arachne.

Mike (40:57.732)
the spiders. I don't know. I just turned to a page and they're talking about spiders.

David And Delaney (40:58.568)
yeah.

David And Delaney (41:05.967)
wait a minute. Does that happen in this book? It does. Yeah. Yeah, Aries is-

Mike (41:09.034)
It does at the water park. least it may be, you know, a recurring thing about spiders, you know, like anytime Harrison Ford sees a snake. I hate snakes.

David And Delaney (41:22.742)
It had to be snakes. I considering Annabeth has severe arachnophobia. Yes.

Mike (41:30.616)
Yes, I'm sure it comes up in future books as well.

David And Delaney (41:35.826)
It does. That's why she said, I'm not going to do that.

Mike (41:37.12)
Okay, cool. But they're bigger and better and tastier.

David And Delaney (41:42.966)
They are in fact bigger and a lot creepier and I will not go into the details here. And not mechanical? Yeah.

Mike (41:47.268)
Sweet. Well, all righty.

David And Delaney (41:55.602)
Anything, any other closing words on this amazing book? I'm so glad that I read.

Mike (42:01.646)
yes. can we end this already so I can go pick up the next book in the series?

David And Delaney (42:10.454)
Hahaha, yes! Please don't.

Mike (42:12.876)
I have been waiting for two days.

David And Delaney (42:15.605)
We've been warned! Ashley, correction. There is a good place to stop, but it is at, The Last Olympian, which is a fifth book of this art.

Mike (42:24.929)
Okay.

David And Delaney (42:26.23)
I'll warn you that that is your- that- just- if you- cause this- for that one, the plot ends. It ends. You won't be left on a cliff here or anything. The arc has ended. We- the next group starts with people you don't know at all. So, that is the place to end it.

Mike (42:34.456)
Okay.

Mike (42:38.326)
it doesn't matter if

Mike (42:42.244)
Right. But, but then I'll be waiting for these people to show up as special guest stars. And then I'll be all worried. Are they going to show up? Are they not going to show up? Why? So I'll have them all done by next week. 30 of 30 ish.

David And Delaney (43:05.75)
And then Kim will be like, where's my husband? No, seriously, please.

Mike (43:11.3)
He's down in the basement reading. It's 190 hours straight.

David And Delaney (43:19.316)
And Monica will be like, where's my husband? They're like, he's digging a basement in the backyard.

But on a more serious note, please don't start reading the second arc. They are much, much longer, around an average of 400-500 pages each.

Mike (43:31.692)
Okay. Okay.

Mike (43:37.718)
Okay. Warning has been taken. I will end on book five, which wraps things up and then, you know, next summer when we have a break, because we've got to take a break sometime. then maybe I'll pick up the next set.

David And Delaney (43:45.792)
Thank you.

David And Delaney (44:02.614)
Sounds good. I'll warn you, they're not as funny and they're in third person instead of first person. And the POV switches every three chapters or so. That's confusing. And the chapters are in Roman numerals.

Mike (44:05.622)
okay. Okay.

Mike (44:13.547)
wow, interesting.

For some reason this isn't deterring me, it's making me more intrigued. Like,

David And Delaney (44:21.142)
No! She's true that you were not doing well to save you, No!

Mike (44:29.189)
If you don't talk about them, that's better. Cause it's like bad B movies. No matter how bad it is, I have to watch. have to see it to the end. Cause something good might come out of it. And it never does. So don't ever watch the room. I'll leave it at that.

David And Delaney (44:43.252)
You can't.

David And Delaney (44:51.069)
Exactly!

David And Delaney (44:55.936)
Plus that one actually was end on a cliffhanger into the next series. The room desk?

David And Delaney (45:04.928)
Come back! No, the next earth does have a cliffhanger. Okay. And I would not recommend, because then you have to read 15 different books.

Mike (45:14.447)
Cool.

Mike (45:18.839)
You know what I think is really funny is when they end and someone's hanging from a cliff.

David And Delaney (45:27.178)
That is pretty cool.

Mike (45:27.333)
Cause that's a real cliffhanger. I'm just literal, literally that's a cliffhanger.

David And Delaney (45:30.134)
That is a literal. I'm going to write a book like that one day and there'll be someone hanging from a cliff by one, like one finger, a a pinky finger.

Mike (45:39.727)
How are you gonna get out of chapter one?

David And Delaney (45:42.998)
There was one.

Mike (45:45.111)
is this a story?

David And Delaney (45:49.234)
okay. I have to write a lot. It's taking a lot of words. There's words, so many words. Hey, what are we doing next? That is how we traditionally end an episode, or as the Greeks would say in episodii. Epoceti. Epi.

Mike (45:50.542)
Long story short.

Word.

Mike (45:57.72)
I have no idea. actually I do. I totally know what we're doing next. We are doing a book by C.C.

David And Delaney (46:07.67)
Are you... that's so funny. didn't like... Not much. I couldn't tell if you were, if the video was frozen or if you were so repulsed by what I said that you just went like this.

Mike (46:10.165)
How much of that did you hear?

Mike (46:17.509)
Ahem.

David And Delaney (46:24.214)
I mean that's what I did. Because what I said was so repulsive, either of those could have been true. Thankfully the video was frozen. Anyway, what?

Mike (46:32.069)
So we're gonna go back in time. So, well David, the next book we're gonna read is called L.Defo. It's written by C.C. Bell.

David And Delaney (46:34.368)
You didn't hear me, did

Yes Mike?

David And Delaney (46:42.292)
Yes! That's okay, yes, I remember this now. Okay, excellent.

Mike (46:46.999)
It's a graphic novel. Where'd Delaney go? Her show's not over. Come back!

David And Delaney (46:51.862)
I don't know. This one was on purpose. And there were no like dad jokes or bad...

What?

Mike (47:02.895)
So, L-Defo, and we're gonna have Ruby come on the show and talk with us then.

David And Delaney (47:11.391)
Excellent.

David And Delaney (47:14.944)
Alright, well should we say goodnight?

Mike (47:15.503)
So, so well, I guess so. Thanks for, thanks for watching another episode listening to an, thanks for being here with us at dads on books. That's a box.

David And Delaney (47:26.88)
That's on bugs. All right. thank you. Thank you Delaney for joining us. It has been a lot of fun, which does not surprise me at all.

Mike (47:36.943)
Great. You're so short.

Mike (47:42.25)
there you are. Control Z. You just, just growed up.

David And Delaney (47:43.51)
She just growed up. Did you grow up?

JIGGERIDUS

Mike (47:49.903)
Well, y'all have fun now. And, there's my phone. Bye bye. And what's that we say? Keep reading or read something or go out and get a book.

David And Delaney (47:52.884)
Okay, you can like, bye bye. Bye bye. Bye.

David And Delaney (48:04.47)
Books are good.

Mike (48:07.493)
Check out your local library. Well, don't check out the library, go to the library and check out a Yeah. Yeah.

David And Delaney (48:09.994)
Go to your-

David And Delaney (48:13.886)
Yeah, and look in the card catalog file for books and check them out. And they'll stamp the date on the card so you know when it's due. And then they'll do something. They'll give you a fine if you bring it in late.

Mike (48:27.877)
Do they still stamp cards? I didn't think so, yeah. No, that's fine.

David And Delaney (48:30.102)
No. That's the point. They don't charge fines either. No, they just charge you it wasn't you.

The closer you are to finding...

Mike (48:39.973)
And we're out.

David And Delaney (48:44.096)
Cut the cameras.
